MOL ship breaks up and drifts in Indian Ocean
|
An 8,540 TEU vessel operated by Japanese line MOL broke in two during rough weather and drifted in the Indian Ocean about 200 miles from the Yemeni coast yesterday while en route from Singapore to Jeddah.
All 26 crew of MOL Comfort - made up of 11 Russians, one Ukrainian and 14 Filipinos - escaped the ship on two life rafts and a lifeboat, the carrier said in a statement.
"At about noon on June 17, during inclement weather, [MOL Comfort] suffered a crack amidships and began ingressing water in the hold," the statement said.
"Some of the containers on the vessel were lost overboard or suffered damage during the incident."
Mol stated: "At about noon JST on Tuesday, the fore part of the hull was drifting at around 13'00"N 60'40"E, and the aft part about 19 miles southwest from that point. Both parts of the ship are laden with containers and drifting in an east-northeast direction. We are arranging tugboats to tow both parts.''
The dramatic photo taken by Press Trust of India shows just how extensive the damage was. The vessel, carrying 7,041 TEUs, split in two near the centre.
MOL Comfort was registered in the Bahamas and built in 2008. It is one of two 8,540 TEU sister vessels built for MOL at Imabari's Koyo Dockyard, Japan. The ship was one of 11 vessels deployed on the G6-Alliance's MOL and APL-operated Far East to Europe Loop 1.
